As the largest city in the area, Sullivan has a more bustling energy to it than perhaps other, smaller regions. Its major roads are West Jackson Street (or the IL 121) and North Hamilton Street (or the IL 32), both of which continue out into Moultrie County. The next biggest areas around Sullivan are as follows: Bethany to the northwest, Lovington to the north, and Mattoon to the southeast. 

The city of Sullivan, IL provides its residents and visitors with a plethora of things to do. Sullivan has two community centers, Building 1225 and Sullivan Civic Center, which are great options for families who want to get out and about.

Sullivan also has two large parks, located in the northern part of the city. Wyman Park and Tabor Park are wide open green spaces surrounded by large trees. Asa Creek, which runs through Tabor Park, eventually leads into Kaskaskia River.

Locals agree that one of Sullivan’s gems is The Little Theatre On The Square: a non-profit organization that puts on plays and musicals, and hosts events and workshops, focusing on children and teens. 

Nature-lovers will find Sullivan appealing for its location. Lake Shelbyville, one of the most popular attractions in the state, is just 3.5 miles away. Access campgrounds, nature preserves, parks, and more, all just a short drive away. 

Also nearby is the Sullivan Country Club, Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Management Area, and Bo Wood Campground.

Real estate in Sullivan, Illinois is composed mainly of quaint Bungalows on quiet streets, although you will sometimes encounter a multi-story home for sale. These single-family homes are built in more traditional architectural styles as opposed to modern, and this adds to the small-town charm of the city. 

Typically, properties in Sullivan come with fair sized yards with mature trees on the lot. The streets are relatively quiet and narrow, but it’s easy to get to the town center (where you will find a number of shops and restaurants).

Sullivan, Illinois History

The city of Sullivan, Illinois was named after Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina, also the location of Fort Moultrie. This city has a long, rich history. Founded in 1845, this city was the site of two major fires that destroyed the courthouse and Titus Opera House, respectively, as well as the site of a riot during the Lincoln-Douglas presidential race.
